Slinky’s are quite fun…
Ever since I was a child age 7 or 8 I used to hold one up to my ear from the top of my bunk bed and listen to the sweet sound of frequency dispersion – that tell tale pew pew sound you hear from movies like StarWars. Little did I know at the time that this was how Ben Burtt (the sound editor and forefather of sound design) developed these weapon sounds by recording high tensile wire impacts.
Recently I have been experimenting with surface transducer pickups which allow you to access the physical sound of an object. These are the vibrations within the object which often sound very different than what you hear by air transmission.
This is just an early video of some of the sound I was able to achieve by attaching a Dazzo Pickup directly to the slinky wire at the bottom and flicking it to see what I was able to record.
